Spring AC Maintenance Checklist & Quiz

spring ac maintenance repairSpring is here, and for a lot of us in Oswego, Yorkville, Naperville, Aurora and Plainfield (IL), that usually means a comfortable seasonal window before the heat rolls in starting in June. We can open the windows and screen doors, take a nice walk outside and even give the AC a little rest before it’s called into regular action again.

Here at Air Dynamics we’re big believers in system maintenance during springtime as well. You don’t need to run the AC often yet, and there’s still comfortable time to clean and tune up the system to ensure it operates in peak condition when you need it. If we do identify a potential problem, it’s also still early enough to correct it.

Arranging maintenance in spring benefits you as the homeowner too, because technicians’ schedules aren’t backed up with the service calls that increase with summer’s greater demands on the air conditioner.

Beyond AC that keeps you properly comfortable, cool and safe, we also believe in helping you be a smart consumer. The better you understand your system and how it operates for you, the more performance you can enjoy from it while potentially lowering energy bills and usage as well.

Being informed also supports longer life for your unit – a great asset to you as system replacement costs continue to rise.

With all of this being said, we thought it’d be fun to test your current knowledge. Take the following quiz and see how you do. The answers appear at the bottom of this post!

Answer Key

  1. False The thermostat’s position (e.g. in direct sunlight from a window) can influence how it reads temperatures and possibly confuse the AC system.
  2. False Closing registers and vents can lead to more energy use and even equipment damage.
  3. b) extracting heat from within a home
  4. False A ceiling or free-standing fan can help an older AC unit work better by circulating cool air more quickly.
  5. False Having the unit cycle on and off doesn’t cost extra. If no one will be affected – including pets – you’ll save more money and energy by turning it off when not using it for extended periods.
  6. d) Dissipate heat from the refrigerant downstream of the compressor
  7. c) 12 to 15 years
  8. d) three months. Checking the filter even more frequently during increasing summer heat is also smart system maintenance.
  9. False Setting the thermostat very low will cause the unit to work harder than necessary, putting extra strain on the system while raising your energy bill.
  10. a) once a year
